Abstract
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the differences of sustained attention and frequency of hyperactive behaviors during attention task between combined and predominantly inattentive type of Attention deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Materials and Methods: Forty children who fulfilled the criteria of ADHD, combined (N=21) and inattentive type (N=19) by DSM-IV and twenty-two children selected - as control group have performed the Vigilance task. We assessed the change of performance level and frequency of five separate behaviors (automanipulations, arm movements, body shifts, visual shifts, vocalizations) in the time course of the task.
Results: More decline in task performance of the two ADHD groups than the control group was observed as time proceeds. The ADD+H group committed more commission errors than the ADD-H group in the course of the task. The ADD+H children have showed more arm movements and body shifts than the control group over time. The two ADHD groups did look away from the task more frequently than control children over a period of time, and the degree of increment was significantly larger in ADD+H than ADD-H children.
Conslusion: These results suggest that two subtype of ADHD (combined and inattentive) all have deficit in sustained attention and show increased hyperactive behaviors during the course of attention task. The ADD+H children have showed more impulsive responses and visual shifts than the ADD-H children over time. To investigate the relationship between task accuracy and hyperactivity during the task, further research with more refined method is required.
